Police: Door-to-door peddlers must obtain permits

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A permit must be carried by anyone going to door-to-door making sales, Amarillo Police reminded residents on Monday.

In order to receive a permit, the person must register in person at the Amarillo Police Department. Police said the applicant is checked to make sure they quality to receive the permit.

Anyone who applies with a previous conviction of a serious offense or on parole or probation stemming from offenses within the last 10 years are disqualified, police said.

Sex offenders are also denied a permit.

According to police, burglary alarm sales require a specific state license. Without that license, they will not be granted a city permit.

Exception to the rule are for local youth organizations that are non-profit entities.

Before purchasing anything, residents are urged to contact the Better Business Bureau or research the company.

Residents who believe a door-to-door salesperson is violating the law are asked to call APD at 378-3038. Violators of this law can be arrested and fined, police said.
