Child support national average, Texas lags

Child support payments average $430 per month across the nation, according to a 2010 report from the U.S. Census Bureau. The national survey provides a comprehensive look at the social and economic well-being of children in households where support comes from provider parents.

The statistics from the Survey of Income and Program Participation show that child support averaged $5,150 annually to children under the age of 21 years. In the state of Texas more child support was collected than any other state in 2010, including California. But Texas lags in collecting overdue support for parents who are paying child support. Delinquent cases and amounts owed are rising faster here than in many other states.

Texas parents owe about $13.3 billion in current and back child support. Texas can dock wages and income tax refunds, among other options, to collect. And the amount of child support owed in Texas is rising faster than in other places. members, such as parents and other relatives.
