AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A 16-year-old girl is safe after police said a man attempted to kidnap her.
The man who tried to kidnap her, 44-year-old Antonio Veloz Flores, was later arrested on charges of Driving While Intoxicated, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of a Controlled Substance in a Correctional Facility and Unlawful Restraint of a Child Under 17.
At about 7:30 p.m., on Monday, police said they were called to the 3200 block of North Hill on a possible attempted kidnapping. A 16-year-old girl told police a man tried to force her into his vehicle.
She told police she was walking to friend's house when she noticed a man inside a pickup following her near the intersection of Mesa Verde and North Hill. She said the driver offered her money on several occasions as he was trying to get her to go inside his vehicle.
The girl, according to police, said the pickup followed her for at least a block before the driver got out and grabbed her by the arm, trying to drag her into the truck.
Police said the girl was able to free herself. She then started running to her friend's house. The man, according to police, got out of his pickup and stood in front of it while the girl continued knocking on the door. Police said he stood there for about five minutes before leaving.
A witness, police said, also observed the man following the girl.
The girl was able to give police a vehicle description along with a tag number.
Officers went to the location of where the pickup was registered and were able to detain Flores. Police said he appeared to be intoxicated. In his clothing police said they found cocaine.
The 16-year-old girl was uninjured.
