AMARILLO, TEXAS -- In April, Amarillo reached record temperatures, and hasn't looked back since.

But times, they are a chagin'. After one of the hottest Junes in recent memory, the people of Amarillo are asking one question, when will the madness end?

"It looks like our rain chances are going to be increasing early this week so we're going to have a very good chance for some rain fall," said Jose Garcia, National Weather Service Meteorologist.

He adds, that the weather is shifting from a La Nina weather pattern, to an El Nino, potentially bringing more rain to the panhandle.

"We are moving out of the La Nina, which brought us very hot dry weather this past year. We're moving into more of an El Nino. We're actually seeing moisture values that are comparable to two years ago, so this is kind of exciting for us".

El Nino in the past has meant more rainfall during the spring and summer, and even snowfall in the winter months, for the Texas Panhandle. However the weather change won't be enough unfortunately to turn the dry plains into a wetland.

"It's going take a long extended period of near normal rainfall to really bring us out of the drought we've been in over the last few years," said Jose.

To beat the heat, the National Weather Service informs people to try to stay indoors, and when you do have to venture outside, make sure to stay hydrated.
