SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico prisons are under a statewide lockdown as officials look for drugs and weapons.

Deputy Secretary of Operations Joe Booker said Thursday the lockdown was ordered Wednesday and will last no more than five days.

Officials say the lockdown will affect all prisons in New Mexico that have state inmates, including private contract prisons.

During the shakedown, prison staff will look for drugs, weapons, gang paraphernalia, and anything suspicious.

State prisons went under a lockdown last year when officials tried to break up prison gang activity.

Officials say prisons have been hit hard by inmates trying to smuggling in drugs via envelopes and children's color books.
