AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A 28-year-old Amarillo man was killed Wednesday evening when police said his motorcycle traveled up a transmission pole guy wire.

According to Amarillo Police, a Yamaha R6 motorcycle, driven by 28-year-old Michael Lee Davidson, was traveling on Smelter Road north of Northwest 15th Avenue at about 8:14 p.m.

Police said the motorcycle left the road at a high rate of speed and lost control. The motorcycle traveled up an Xcel Energy transmission pole guy wire, police said. It then sheared off the pole about 12 foot above ground level.

Davidson was transported to the hospital where he later died, police said.

An autopsy has been ordered and police said speed is a factor in the crash. Police also said narcotics are a possible factor in the crash.

Davidson was not wearing a helmet, police said.

Anyone who may have witnessed this crash is asked to contact police at 378-4250.
