ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Civil rights groups and immigrant advocates have released a report that faults most law enforcement agencies in New Mexico on racial profiling. The report unveiled yesterday says less than a quarter of agencies surveyed are in compliance with a 2009 state law banning bias policing. The survey said only the Socorro County Sheriff's Department and Santa Fe and Socorro police were in full compliance with the law.
WASHINGTON (AP) - The campaigns of Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama are gaining a Spanish accent, and it's no surprise. Romney's son Craig in a TV ad explains in fluent Spanish that his dad is a man "con grandes convicciones," or "of strong beliefs." The Obama campaign has recycled its 2008 campaign slogan, "Si, se puede," or "Yes, we can," for this year's run, an attempt to retain the Latino support he received the last time he ran.
RUIDOSO, N.M. (AP) - Homeowners who have damage from the Little Bear Fire in southern New Mexico are being urged to sign up for assistance. Lincoln County officials say some part-time residents still have not signed up for cleanup help. Crews have cleared up debris from nearly half the more than 240 homes and other structures destroyed by the fire.
SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (AP) - Sunland Park taxpayers are being asked to help the southern New Mexico border city to help close a $2 million budget deficit. The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that the City Council is raising property taxes to help close a $2 million budget deficit, blamed on mismanagement. The city is also considering layoffs and other budget cuts.
