OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Customized acrylic storm windows similar to those used on U.S. space shuttles could help reduce harmful sunlight coming through Capitol dome windows and harming priceless artwork.
State Capitol Preservation Commission members were told Thursday the windows would have the added benefit of reducing summertime heat in the rotunda.
According to The Oklahoman (http://bit.ly/PwgFb3), Capitol architect and curator Duane Mass said the acrylic windows would be attached to each of the dome's 16 windows.
Mass says the windows would cost a fraction of the expense of installing a screen material, or scrims, to the dome. Commissioners considered installing a motorized scrim on each window.
He says an acrylic window to cover each of vertical dome windows would cost about $1,000. Mass says installing motorized scrims could be as much as $250,000.
