DALLAS (AP) - Dallas authorities are investigating how a woman who called 911 before she was killed wasn't found by officers in her apartment until two days later. Police say Deanna Cook called 911 Friday from a cellphone, but the operator didn't get her address and a search took about 9 minutes before police arrived at Patrick's southeast Dallas home. They knocked on the door and got no response, checked the windows, saw nothing and left. She was found Sunday.
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) - An appeal that seeks to delay Wednesday's execution of a former auto mechanic who shot and killed three of his former housemates 14 years ago won't be heard by a federal appeals court. The lawyer for 43-year-old convicted killer John Balentine had asked the full 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to consider the appeal after it was rejected by a three-judge panel of the court. The full court voted 11-4 Tuesday to reject the request.
DALLAS (AP) - Another West Nile virus death has been reported in Dallas County. Health officials say a person who lived in north Dallas is the 11th county resident killed by the virus that mosquitoes spread from birds to people. The county has confirmed more than 260 human cases.
HOUSTON (AP) - A Houston charter school principal has resigned amid allegations that staff members and two former students drank alcohol on campus last month. Officials with KIPP Sunnyside High School say Shannon Wheatley knew about the incident but failed to report it.
DALLAS (AP) - Authorities say they've closed their investigation into the death of a rare white buffalo on the Lakota Ranch near Greenville this past spring. The ranch owner claimed the calf was killed and mutilated but a veterinarian has determined it died from a bacterial infection. White buffalo calves are revered by Native Americans.
