SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez makes a primetime speech Tuesday on the second day of the Republican National Convention. Martinez will deliver her remarks right before the keynote speaker, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. The slot increases the national television exposure for Martinez, who is the nation's first Hispanic female governor.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - After two years of drought, nearly three miles of the Pecos River have dried up and there are islands popping up that weren't there before. National Weather Service say the southeastern corner of New Mexico has been hit the hardest by the drought. Many areas have seen only a couple of inches of rain since the beginning of the year, and monsoon season has been too spotty to make up for the deficit.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A judge has ruled that prosecutors can't use statements that John McCluskey made to investigators in his trial for the murder of an Oklahoma couple in New Mexico. The Albuquerque Journal reports that the judge says officers improperly interrogated McCluskey after he invoked his right to an attorney. McCluskey was one of three prisoners who escaped from an Arizona prison and went a multi-state crime spree.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Governor of Indiana is standing behind the state's National Guard director after the New Mexico-based Military Religious Freedom Foundation accused the general of violating the First Amendment. The group says Indiana Adjutant General Martin Umbarger should not have endorsed family services from the Christian military services group Centurion's Watch.
