CANYON, TEXAS -- West Texas A&M announced Tuesday afternoon its goal for the new comprehensive campaign for the university -- a whopping $35 million!

Tuesday marked the official kickoff of the public donation part of the campaign. Campaign Chairman Don Powell spoke at the event and it was announced that he and his wife are supporting the campaign with a one million dollar lead gift to the university. That donation is one among seven donations valued each at one million dollars or more that was given to the university during the lead gift phase.

"It's about helping students, it's about helping capital plans for buildings, it's about programs, it's about professorships," said Campaign Chairman Don Powell. "Anyway, we can help tell and expand the mission of West Texas A&M."

"We've got to rely on foundations, corporations, our Alumni, friends of the university to help support the university, to make an investment in Texas," added President of WTAMU Joseph Patrick O'Brien. "That's what this is all about, an investment."

All of the money raised from the campaign will go toward student scholarships, program enhancement and capital projects. The majority of the money, 15 million of the 35 million, will toward student scholarships.

"The largest share of the funds we're trying to raise are for scholarships," added O'Brien. "That provides greater opportunities for students to be able to pursue higher education. University are always in the fundraising mode," he added. "This will be the largest campaign that the university has ever had."

The public donation phase of the campaign will run through September 1, 2014.
