There was another reported death over in the Dallas area this week from the West Nile Virus, as aerial spraying has all but concluded there.

Closer to home, Randall county seems to be the hot spot with a total of now ten reported cases. And that increase means a stepped up effort on spraying to eradicate mosquitoes.

Seeing health officials spraying area playa lakes, standing water and heavy vegetation is nothing new around here. What is new is the increase in the number of west nile virus cases, transmitted to humans by mosquitoes, according to Dr. Matt Richardson, Amarillo's Director of Public Health.

"We have confirmed 10 cases in Randall county, none in Potter, but that could change over time as additional cases are likely to be reported. Mosquitoes don't know county lines or geographical barriers. right now, we do know the mosquitoes are positive in the Panhandle and the best way to avoid West Nile Virus is to avoid getting bitten."

There won't be any aerial spraying, but there will be a stepped up effort to spray larvacide across the areas where mosquitoes are likely to be, hopefully bringing them and the threat of west nile virus under control.

"It's hard to say why this years numbers are higher in texas or in this region. We do know that the drought has had effects on the mosquito population. there are fewer numbers the important thing to note is that west nile virus is endemic here. meaning it's all over the Panhandle, Texas and we've got to be diligent on avoiding those mosquito bites.

West Nile Virus can mimic flu symptoms, but it can bring on neurological issues, and in severe cases--death. That's why officials say to remember the 4 d's.
