AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A citizen saved the day and detained the man who police say was driving the pickup stolen in an armed robbery from Wednesday morning.

The man detained was 22-year-old Daniel Colt Hunter.

At about 3:35 p.m., Wednesday, Amarillo Police Department SWAT officers spotted the vehicle taken in the motel parking lot robbery. The vehicle was spotted near 8th and South Parker.

Officers said a marked patrol unit tried to stop the vehicle as it was traveling west on 7th but it would not stop. A pursuit initially started but police said it was canceled because the suspect's driving created hazard for other drivers.

Police said the pickup continued west on 7th and ran a stop sign at South McMasters. The pickup struck the front right fender of a brown 1982 Pontiac vehicle, police said. Inside the Pontiac was a female driver and seven children ranging in ages from 7 to 14.

The driver and an 8-year-old passenger both sustained "non-incapacitating injuries."

The driver of the stolen pickup, according to police, them jumped out of the vehicle and ran. Police said he left the pickup in gear as he fled.

The pickup made a half circle and crossed back into the northbound lanes of McMasters striking a yellow 2003 GMC van, police said. The van did not sustain serious damage and the occupants were not injured.

Police said Hunter was detained in front of a store near 6th and South Georgia. A Potter County Deputy arrived and arrested the suspect. .

He was already wanted on a charge of Evading in a Motor Vehicle out of Potter County. Inside his backpack he abandoned, police said they found more than one gram of methamphetamine.

Hunter was booked into the Potter County Jail on the evading in a motor vehicle warrant, a new evading charge and possession of a controlled substance. Robbery charges have not been filed.

The investigation is ongoing.
