UPDATE
Authorities said the teenage boy was rescued and transported to a hospital. His condition was not immediately available.

A search and rescue effort is underway at Tucumcari Mountain as a teenage boy became trapped on a ledge, New Mexico State Police said.

State Police had to be called in after the local agencies were not able to reach the boy, authorities said. The search and rescue effort, consisting of volunteers, was called at about 2 p.m., MDT.

The Quay County Sheriff's Office said it had been at the scene most of the day.

"Things like this happen more than they should but we have an excellent resource in the search and rescue volunteers," Lt. Robert McDonald with the New Mexico State Police said.

McDonald said he did not believe the boy was injured.
