WHEELER COUNTY, TEXAS -- A pursuit crossing the Oklahoma-Texas state border ended in Wheeler County on Sunday morning, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

The driver, 36-year-old Eugene Leroy Arnold, Jr., of Sayre, Okla., sustained a gunshot wound and was killed following the pursuit, authorities said.

Early Sunday morning, authorities said Arnole fled after a traffic stop while traveling westbound on Interstate 40. According to the Beckham County (Okla.) Sheriff's Office, Arnold was wanted for violating a protective order.

The Wheeler County Sheriff's Office and a DPS trooper joined the pursuit east of Shamrock on I-40, authorities said. Arnold then turned north on County Road 26.

Authorities said Arnold crashed through a fence and drove into a field off County Road W.

Contact was made with Arnold by a Beckham County Sheriff's deputy, police said. The deputy, according to DPS, deployed his taser.

DPS said according to its preliminary investigation, Arnold started fighting the deputy and tried to take his gun. During the struggle, DPS said Arnole sustained a gunshot wound and died.

The Wheeler County Sheriff's Office and the Texas Rangers are investigating this incident.
