AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The average American teacher will spend $1,000 going 'back to school'. But thanks to OfficeMax, one Amarillo teacher won't have to spend a penny.
Brittany Hinz, first grade teacher at South Lawn Elementary received $1,000 in classroom supplies from the 'A Day Made Better' advocacy program by OfficeMax. The program provides 1,000 teachers nationwide with classroom supplies annually.
Recipients are nominated by their principals, and Brittany Hinz was thoroughly surprised by the honor.
"Yes, I was completely surprised," Hinz said. "I was just thinking how I really do need these things, it's just very exciting to be recognized that way."
A Day Made Better is part of the OfficeMax Goodworks program, which has contributed more than $18 million in grants and supplies supporting more than 29,000 classrooms nationwide. To show her gratitude, Brittany plans on thanking OfficeMax in a way only first grade teachers can.
"This is great," Hinz said, "they'll be receiving some letters, about 19 first grade letters to tell them thank you and we'll definitely use this stuff."
As for her students, they were just as excited. Said one little girl 'this is the happiest day of my life.'
