SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Election Day is still four weeks away, but New Mexicans can start voting Tuesday in the general election.

County clerks will begin mailing out absentee ballots and voters can go to their clerk's office to cast a ballot in person.

Tuesday also is the deadline for people to register to vote.

Ballots were sent out starting last month to military personnel and other U.S. citizens living overseas.

In the presidential election four years ago, about 833,000 New Mexicans cast ballots. Absentee voting accounted for one in five of those who participated in the 2008 general election.

Early voting will expand starting Oct. 20 to alternate polling sites established by clerks and that will continue through Nov. 3.

Election Day is Nov. 6.
