AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Amarillo College is distributing 2,000 safety whistles to females who utilize its facilities.

The college, according to a release, dedicated the fall semester to women's safety. The whistles were produced by Whistles for Life and are similar to the ones used by the National Association for Search and Rescue.

"A whistle is one of the few things you can carry for self-defense that can't be turned against you," AC's Crime Prevention Coordinator Darryl Moore said. "Plus, criminals don't want to draw attention when they are up to no good."

The whistles are being given away on all campuses.

Wednesday, Oct. 31: Community Link, 24th and Grand, 11 a.m.-noon & 5 p.m.
Monday, Nov. 5: Hereford Campus, 9-11 a.m
Tuesday, Nov. 6: Washington Street Campus, Clock Tower, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m.
Thursday, Nov. 8: Moore County Campus, 10 a.m.-noon
Tuesday, Nov. 13: West Campus, Allied Health Bldg., 11 a.m.-1 p.m. & 5-7 p.m.

Officials said the whistles can be carried on a keychain or worn on a lanyard.
