Two decades of data reveals that kids have a greater chance of being fatally injured by a car on Halloween than any other day of the year.
According to Sperling's BestPlaces, Halloween was the deadliest day of the year for child-pedestrian accidents. From 1990-2012, 115 child pedestrian fatalities happened to children up the age of 18 on Halloween. That is more than double the average of 2.6 fatalities on the other days.
Amarillo Police said it is important that adults accompany children while our trick-or-treating.
"First and foremost, parents need to go with their children," Corporal Jerry Nuefeld of the Amarillo Police Department said. "We don't want young children out walking door to door by themselves. We need to make sure they close parent, or at least an older brother, supervision with them. And again we encourage kids only go to the house were the porch lights are light up. I know they are going to be excited and to want get to as many houses as they can."
The deadliest hour, according to the study, was between 6 and 7 at night. The study also found that more than 70 percent of the accidents happened away from intersections or cross walks.
