AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Employees of Xcel Energy who were sent to help those affected by Superstorm Sandy are heading home.

Xcel said the first wave of the Texas-New Mexico crews who assisted with the power outage restoration flew back to Texas on Tuesday. A second wave is set to return with the vehicles and equipment.

"We're very proud of the employees from our area who sacrificed their time away from families and daily routines to help their fellow Americans," said Gary Lakey, Xcel Energy director of distribution operations in Texas and New Mexico. "They have worked safely and have represented the values of their home communities and of this company in an exemplary fashion. They will never forget these experiences, and the people they helped will never forget them. The good people of Long Island now know what we've known for years - Xcel Energy employees are second to none."

Xcel Energy sent more than 30 of its Texas-New Mexico employees to help restore electricity service after Superstorm Sandy.

Sandy caused tens of thousands of customers along the East Coast to lose power.

The employees who traveled to help were based in Hobbs, Carlsbad, Clovis, Tucumcari and Roswell in New Mexico; and Levelland, Seminole, Plainview, Canyon, Hereford, Amarillo, Borger, Perryton and Lubbock in Texas, Xcel said.
