New Mexico State Police arrested a 14-year-old boy on Tuesday for the murder of his adopted mother.

State Police responded to shots fired at a home in Tucumcari, New Mexico Monday night.

The teen confessed to shooting 67-year-old Sue Day, and stabbing her biological daughter, 49-year-old Sherry Folts. He was legally adopted by the family two years ago.

“He has not given us a motive yet,” said New Mexico State Police Captain, Ryan Suggs. “But no doubt, this is an unfortunate event, and you can’t make sense of it.”

The Day family has worked with the Children, Youth and Families Department for seven years taking in foster children.

Police say that there was also a 9-month-old girl inside the home at the time of the incident. The adoptive father, Mike Day and a 16-year-old adoptive boy were able to restrain the 14-year-old boy before calling the police.

The teen is currently being held at Quay County Juvenile Detention Center and is being charged with two counts of murder.
