AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Female engineers from Pantex hosted "Smart Cookie Saturday" for dozens of young girls Saturday afternoon.

The Girl Scouts of Texas-Oklahoma Plains gathered in the Amarillo High School cafeteria to learn about the various components of the engineering industry. The workshop included activities that demonstrated the principles of a variety of careers within engineering, such as electrical, mechanical, civil, and chemical fields.

Pantex engineers hope to develop a new generation of engineers through the workshop, as they have seen a decline of female participation in math and sciences. The hands-on workshop was meant to foster an interest in higher education.

Girl Scouts program leaders promoted high school for junior high girls, and college for high school girls. The workshop is one in a series of courses meant to promote higher education in young girls.
