AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Many people in Amarillo have hoped to see a gas station come to center city, and the Downtown Urban Design Review Board made that hope a reality Monday evening.
The board voted 6:3 in favor of signing a Certificate of Appropriateness for a Toot 'n Totum retail store located at 10th Avenue between Pierce and Buchanan.
After long discussion about the auto-oriented business being set back off of the property line, the board considered how the structure would and would not comply with design standards. And after every board member, members of Toot 'n Totum and the public had their say, it came time to vote.
"All of the board agreed that everybody wants to see this kind of a use downtown," City Planning Director Kelley Shaw stated. "I think there was some discussion on how best to do it. And, so, I think that's where a lot of the discussion took place. And again, it just came down to a majority of the board felt with that type of a use, the variances that were approved were justified."
Shaw said the next step is for the board to sign the certificate. The contractor can then go to apply for a building permit.
Construction dates have not yet been discussed.
