AMARILLO, TEXAS -- For the past 41 years, Meals on Wheels has been delivering one meal a day to around 200 elderly people living in and around Amarillo every single weekday.

Tuesday, the group hosted its annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic Luncheon at the Amarillo Botanical Gardens. Several hundred people gathered to enjoy the free lunch. Pronews 7’s own Jay Ricci emceed the event and several long-time volunteers were recognized for their hard work.

“The majority of them are just people that want to do something, share their time with the community,” said Meals on Wheels Executive Director Marsha Fox. “So, this is just our way of thanking them for that, a small token of our appreciation.”

Fox said the volunteers deliver about nine meals to elderly people on their route each day they deliver. They use their own cars and their own gas, but even still, Fox said, most volunteers say they feel like they get more out of delivering meals than they’re giving.

“You get more out of it than you give serving them,” said Fox. “You sign up to serve somebody but they end up blessing you because they have such positive outlooks and it’s just a blessing to be involved.”
