PAMPA, TEXAS -- To remember and honor some of our country's bravest men and women is the idea behind the Veterans Day. Even though the holiday is held on a Sunday this year, many Texas Panhandle people celebrated early.

"God Bless America", is a familiar song here in the United States. It was played at this year's Travis Elementary School Veterans Day Celebration in Pampa.
It's patriotic song, one that brings a smile to every American's face. But on a veteran's face, along with the struggle over daily reminders of past sacrifices, you'll also see a special pride.

"Days like this where people honor us and take care of us it makes it feel like its all worth it," said Retired Sgt. William Wilk, U.S. Army.

Wilk knows that sacrifice too well. Just over two years ago, he lost his right leg in an accident overseas. He's served in the United States Army since 2008, and done two tours in Iraq. He now spends time with the Patriot Warrior Foundation, a group of wounded service men and women.

"No ones remembering right now that yesterday we lost two guys in Afghanistan. The day before we lost one more, no one even realizes we're still fighting," said Wilk.

This is the 14th year for the school to host the Veterans Day Celebration.

"We call it a celebration because it's a celebration of the lives of so many veterans that have kept our freedom for us, and fought for us, some even given their lives.I want to instill that in my kids at Travis, its just become my passion," said Kay Pittman, Travis Elementary Music Teacher.

Congressman Mac Thornberry was also in attendance. He gave his thanks to our veterans.

This program has grown so much over the years, they now hold it in Pampa's M.K Brown Auditorium.
