PORTALES, N.M. -- The FDA has stopped production at the Sunland, Inc. plant in Portales, N.M., after finding salmonella.

Forty-one people in 20 states became ill after eating peanut butter made by the country's largest organic peanut butter processor.  The FDA is using new enforcement authority gained in a 2011 food safety law, which gives the agency the authority to suspend a company's registration when food made or stored there has a "reasonable probability" of causing serious health problems or death.

Sunland, Inc. has sold hundreds of products to many of the nation's largest grocery chains.  But Sunland, Inc. Vice President Katalin Coburn said all contaminated products have been taken off the shelves and destroyed.
