The Dallas Morning News is reporting, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, had hundreds of thousands of dollars stolen from his state political campaign accounts by an aide.

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst's campaign manager, Kenneth "Buddy" Barfield, a longtime GOP consultant, is under criminal scrutiny, suspected of stealing at least $600,000 - and possibly more than $1 million, over the past several years.

Spokesman for the lieutenant governor, Rob Johnson, said Thursday that Dewhurst was "shocked and dismayed that a former senior trusted adviser would steal from the campaign account for his own personal gain."

Campaign aids are accusing Barfield of stealing funds since 2008.

Court documents filed by S&K Development Company, Inc., accuse Barfield of "failing to disclose all of his bank accounts."

Barfield managed several campaigns, including Dewhurst's 2010 reelection and his unsuccessful 2012 senate run.

Dewhurt's campaign has amended financial reports for past races. The new filings show that the campaign was $700,000 less cash on hand than when originally reported.

Dewhurst lost to Tea Party favorite Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in the Republican primary.

Barfield did not immediately return phone calls
