AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The fast spreading grassfires have left dozens without a home Sunday night. Many of the evacuees have been housed at the churches around the area, and it's the Panhandle spirit that's helping those displaced. At River Road Baptist Church, folks poured in to find a place to call a temporary home as flames engulfed theirs.
"We're trying to meet people's needs we have people showing up that have lost virtually everything, lost their homes. We have people that are covered in soot," said Greg Palmer, member of church.
The church is providing food and shelter for many displaced homeowners, as well as a shoulder to cry on.
"We have food available for them we have several volunteers that have shown up that are providing the meal. The City of Amarillohas shown up , they've rolled up their sleeves and been helping us with this. We have cots that are available that are going to be delivered shortly we will have people throughout the night," said Palmer.
River Road Baptist Church is taking donations from food, water, clothes to money. They're located off River Road and Cactus.
Many of the people evacuated in Randall County found solace at The Cowboy Church.
"Am afraid our house is going to burn down. The smoke was terrible it was black and it was getting closer and our house smelled like smoke inside even with the windows closed," said Cheryl Adams, evacuee.
Adams says she's grateful for the kindness the community has shown.
"What would we do without the Red Cross? I mean, I think it's comforting because you're already, as you can see am shook up and am shaking and am worried and to have something like this helps a lot, am very grateful," said Adams.
