The city has approved a new fire station, Amarillo's thirteenth, to be built at the northeast corner of John Stiff Park at 6383 45th Street.
The new station will be a large hub to service the southwest area of the city and the Harrington Regional Medical Center.
"Putting the station there, it's going to alleviate that coverage problem, there will always be a truck there able to respond in that area." said Capt. Jacob Oehlert of the Amarillo Fire Department. "It's going to add extra resources to that side of town."
The station will house two engine companies and a District Chief. Also according to the agenda minutes the heavy rescue unit and related equipment currently being kept at a downtown warehouse location will be moved to the new station.
City commissioners awarded the contract to Southwest General Contractors. The total amount awarded was $2,198,002 for the project that is expected to take 280 days to complete.
Commissioners also approved a variety of other projects including two other small stations to be built and renovations to the central fire station.
The 2.2 Million funds for the project came from a 2007, 4.6 Million dollar certificate of obligations meant to pay these and other renovations.
