AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Winter is fast approaching and the Guyon Saunders Resource Center and the United Way are helping those in need prepare for the cold.
Its annual Winter Outreach program was held at the Recourse Center, invited those who are homeless, but also those who are at risk of becoming homeless.
"Today's event is our annual Winter Outreach program and we're really excited about today." said Meredith Rowley, the 211 Texas Panhandle Outreach Coordinator, "We have over 25 agencies here to provide free services for those experiencing homelessness and those at risk of becoming homeless within our community."
To make sure they're healthy, the participants in the program were treated to free glucose, H-I-V, and dental screenings as well as having their blood pressure and cholesterol checked.
Other tests were also given. And if a participant completed each test , they're allowed to take an item of clothing from the giveaway held at the end of the program.
"The agencies are all here doing this free of charge and they're just here volunteering their service to meet basic needs." contiued Rowley.
This is important to these agencies who sole mission is to provide those basic needs to those less fortunate in our area.
But the "Spirit of the Panhandle," doesn't stop there, those homeless or at risk were also in contact with agencies who are there to help improve the quality of their lives.
"We also have agencies providing information and basic services to move them to more self-sufficient living, more stable, secure quality of life."
