TUCUMCARI, N.M. -- A fire at a Tucumcari animal hospital that killed approximately 50 pets is being declared suspicious, officials said.

New Mexico State Police said the animals consisted of mainly cats and dogs.

Officials first responded to the fire at 3:50 a.m., at the Tucumcari Animal Hospital located in the 100 block of North 10th Street on Monday.

Sgt. Fredrick with the New Mexico State Police said a cause of the fire was not yet known but it appeared to be suspicious.

He said because of the time that the fire happened and two previous suspicious fires in the city, this one is being investigated as being suspicious as well.

The building has heavy damage, Fredrick said.
