SUNRAY, TEXAS -- It's an awe inspiring moment watching a young child give back to their community. That's exactly what's happening at Sunray's Middle School.
The school's student council is giving back to its school and community in a big way with several charitable actions. It's their servant hearts that we're featuring in this week's Region 16 Spotlight on Education report.
"We pick up trash, we collect Box Tops, and we collect coke tabs," said Michael Peeples, Student Council Vice President.
Not only that, but the student council gives back by making rice bags for the elderly, placing flags on veterans graves and raising donations for the food bank and school. Thee sixth graders say it gives them a chance to give back, but also set an example for their student body and get them involved in projects as well.
"It makes me feel good because we get to help out and we get to clean up the community," said Gracen Haberthur, Student Council President.
"I'm looking forward to being part of the Food Bank and going to collect box tops and doing all that kind of good stuff," said Peeples.
That good stuff also includes raising funds to help out families in the school system that may fall on hard times.
"We don't always know what needs exist in the community, but we have funds that can assist families as needed. And we've had that throughout the years. Maybe a family is involved in an accident or hitting a hard time and they just need a helping hand," said Glen Waldo, Sunray Superintendent.
A helping hand by a young group of students who say they're just trying to make a difference in their school and community.
In November, the school is hoping to host a craft show, led by the student council to raise money for that fund to help families in need.
