Walmart.com shoppers will now be able to pay for their purchases at the store with cash.

The world's largest retailer announced it will allow shoppers to purchase items online at walmart.com, then pay for it with cash at any of the 3,8000 stores across the U.S.

Wal-Mart says it is the first major retailer to offer this option, that gives customers the opportunity to buy online without a bank account or credit card.

The company reports that only about 15% of its transactions in stores are from credit cards, and they want to cater to its customers who don't have access to those financial services.

"We are going to touch a segment of the American public who hasn't been able to participate online without going through a lot of hoops," said Joel Anderson, president and CEO of Walmart.com.

So how does it work?

Customers can shop online and place an order, selecting the "cash" option during checkout. After that, they have 48 hours to take their printed order confirmation to any cash register at a Wal-Mart store to pay.

When the order is paid, shoppers can choose to have the order shipped to an address for another fee, or to the store for free.
