AMARILLO, TEXAS -- "(Ben) Gay is Okay"--A music video posted by an Amarillo based hip-hop artist has gone viral.
Just days after being posted on YouTube.
"In hip-hop its cool to gay bash," said Adair Lion. "My idols, everyone I respect in the industry, Kanye, Jay-Z, Eminem. Those are people that constantly gay bash and say derogatory things about the LGBT community."
Adair Lion wants to change that.
"And if people are going to hate me for that, they didn't deserve to get my attention in the first place," he said.
Lion has not always been what he calls a "straight ally" for the LGBT community.
"In the hood I was with my vatos acting a fool so either way being gay was wrong it was against the hood laws or the laws of God," Lion says in his song.
He said the inspiration for the song came from one of his best friends in college.
"He was a really cool guy," Lion said. "Deep voice, beautiful girlfriend. Could dance like crazy, that should have been my first clue. He came out to me when he was a sophomore. I was shocked. I grew up in a rough neighborhood in El Paso."
From that moment, everything changed.
And Lion wanted to make a change in the industry that he loves.
"Obviously the issues is a lot bigger than a three minute song I made but I feel like it helped people that were teetering on the edge," Lion said.
Lion's latest album "Michael & Me", which features the song "Gay is Okay", is set to release June 25.
And remember, "the hottest chicks got a gay in their clique - remember that."
