AMARILLO, TEXAS -- As folks across the Panhandle we're getting ready for costumes and candy one group of walkers and runners hit the streets of Amarillo for cancer patients. The Panhandle Cancer Cure Foundation's first ever event had 225 runners and walkers, some of which were cancer patients.
The event was made up of a 1-K fun run, 5-K run and walk Saturday morning along Coulter and Wallace in the Medical Center area.
This event is different from the race for the cure since the proceeds benefit all cancer and blood disease patients and not just one specified cancer. The money raised goes to specifically help with resources for patients, the money will go towards gas and travel expenses, utilities, and co-pays all things not covered by insurance but can be costly to cancer patients.
"It's going to help their neighbors, their church friends, their family, because it's people in our community and I think that's why we had a lot of people out today because it's our first event and they told me not to expect more than 100 we have 225 and I think it's just because it involved all cancers and all our patients and community," said Jennifer Campos, event coordinator.
The group raised almost 10-thousand dollars during the event.
