AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Today was the Great American Smokeout, where smokers across the country were encouraged to give up the habit for one day.

Pronews 7 wanted to know how much money the state of Texas has collected on a recently approved increase in cigarette taxes. The cigarette tax increased from 41 cents per pack to $1.41 per pack on January 1, 2007. We checked with the Texas Comptrollers Office and found out the state collected over one billion dollars during the fiscal year 2009. The state's fiscal year runs from September 1 to August 31st. Below is a year to year comparison of monies raised through the cigarette tax.
