AMARILLO, TEXAS -- We have an update on the 48-million dollar makeover taking place at Rick Husband International Airport.
The project is moving along on schedule, but progress on the new consolidated concourse may be the most visual. Crews have pretty much completed the erection of the steel infrastructure skeleton, and in March they will start connecting the new consolidated concourse to the existing terminal.
Right now visitors will only see a freshly finished construction wall, but by first quarter 2011, visitors will see a completely different airport.
"The project is important because the airport does serve as the front door to our community, and so when we do have visitors to the Panhandle sometimes this is the first impression they have of our community as well as the last one when they leave," said Scott Carr, Director of Aviation, Rick Husband International Airport.
The entire project is considered around 40% complete. Renovations and construction include: a new consolidated concourse, a more spacious security checkpoint, more food/beverage/retail vendors, and a new air cargo facility, The new air cargo facility is around 95% completed.
Two more changes that should be popular among travelers will be the TSA's in line baggage system (means less bag searches), and the new meet and greet area. This area will serve the folks awaiting arriving flights, or those saying good bye to those catching a flight.
"The project continues to move along on schedule, and I think that the citizens of the Panhandle will be very happy with the improvements once they're finished," said Carr.
