AMARILLO, TEXAS -- When you run the red at one of those camera enforced lights in Amarillo, it goes into a database. At the end of the month, a report on the violations spotted at those intersections will be complete.
Here's a preliminary look at before and after red light cameras were activated. The data spans seven quarters.
Rear-end collisions went up, but others went down like red light collisions, that's after you run the light.
When you run that red-light, the city gets some of the revenue. So far, this year, that total is more than half a million dollars. But the city doesn't get all of that money. Half goes to the state, some goes toward expenses, and the rest goes into traffic safety improvements.
"We're using it to put up signals where we need signals, uh were using $20,000 of it to help with the "Don't Text and Drive" Campaign. We installed a signal preemption system for the fire department downtown so that when they leave the fire house it turns the lights green as they approach the intersection," said Assistant City Manager, Vicki Covey.
Thursday on Pronews 7 we will take a closer look at those comparison numbers and analysis from the city.
