The Amarillo Fire Department will respond to more fire and personal injury calls on the fourth than any other day of the year
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The Amarillo Fire Department will respond to more fire and personal injury calls on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year, so here is a reminder of the hazards associated with fireworks.
Those that are injured due to fireworks related accidents typically are by standers and children. Injuries to the hands, face, and eyes are the most common, and many are permanent life changing accidents.
"Unfortunately you can do everything right with fireworks and still get injured, because they are explosives and there's a lot of heat involved. Sometimes the fireworks will malfunction, sometimes you can do everything right and they operate the way they should, and still you have injuries or fires," said Capt. Bob Johnson of the Amarillo Fire Department.
All fireworks are illegal to possess and set off here within the Amarillo city limits.
"We always recommend every year that people leave the fireworks to the professionals, stay away from consumer fireworks, go to the public display and enjoy it that way," said Johnson.
