One woman's story of survival and recovery

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- One in three women are victims of domestic violence. Amarillo's Family Support Services will provide a safe place for almost 300 victims in this year alone. And while statistics like that paint a picture, they do not tell a story.

So we sat down today with a victim of domestic violence and heard "Tina's" story.

"Tina" says she was an 11 year victim of physical and emotional abuse, but stayed with her husband because of the financial security, and socioeconomic status that she and her family had.

Ultimately, her four sons gave her the final reason to leave.

"I didn't want my sons doing that to another woman. I didn't want my sons thinking it was okay that as long as you were taking care of that person you can do anything, I didn't want them to think that, " Tina said.

Tina and her sons relocated to Amarillo's Family Support Services shelter.

"I just moved here by myself, I knew it was time to stop the cycle of abuse."

Now, Tina has moved from the shelter, has a job, and her sons are in school. She says they are happy to be in a loving and supportive household now,  and are doing well.
