CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) - The driver of an SUV that ran over a Corpus Christi police officer during a chase has been convicted of killing the lawman.

Daniel Lee Lopez was convicted Tuesday of capital murder in the 2009 death of Lt. Stuart Alexander. The officer was hit while trying to stop the SUV with spike strips as Lopez fled from a reported disturbance.

Jurors on Wednesday were scheduled to hear testimony in the punishment phase. The 22-year-old Lopez faces life in prison or the death penalty.

Lopez also was convicted of five counts of attempted capital murder, assault on a public servant, attempted aggravated assault of a public servant, evading arrest and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
