AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Organizers for the Sand Drag Races at the Canadian River will have to meet with county officials and apply for a permit for their big gathering beginning next year.
At Monday's county commissioner's meeting Potter county officials voted to meet with organizers.
The state's mass gathering act requires groups of more than 2500 to meet with officials and provide adequate sanitation, traffic control, and public safety.
Potter County Sheriff, Brian Thomas says, "We don't want to take away their fun, we really don't...but there's a lot of issues..safety issues...health issues...we just need to make sure we've got it in place and that's why we did the mass gathering ordinance."
Organizers will have 45 days before any big event to file the papers that allow for large gatherings anywhere in the state.
