AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Panhandle cancer patients who have no place to stay while getting treatment, now have one. The newly formed Panhandle Hotel and Lodging Association held its first meeting Wednesday night and partnered with the American Cancer Society to provide rooms to cancer patients who travel at least 50 miles to Amarillo for treatment.
Although several local hotels have been taking part in the Guestroom program, this new level of participation should ensure a room for more of those patients.
"If you consider a patient goes through 6 weekend of treatment a Monday though Friday and they're away from home for that time. If they add up the varying cost of hotel rooms it can get quite costly and if some patients, a lot of patients actually, choose if you know what are you going to do if you can't afford to stay there, you're not going to get treatment," said, Terri Prescott, from the panhandle chapter of the American Cancer Society.
If you need help you can call the Society at 1-800-ACS-2345.
