AMARILLO, TEXAS -- As of Thursday, August 12, the City of Amarillo will no longer be holding inmates in their city jail. It's been approved for Randall County to hold their inmates from now on.

Both the city and Randall County have been working on this since 2008. The county's jail is finished with their new addition and will hold an additional 144 inmates strictly for the city.

Thursday, they moved 62 city inmates out there and have officially closed the city jail. City officials say it's a good move for them.

"Our current jail is fairly old, so we had some options as far as renovations. But being able to collaborate with Randall County makes it cost effective for us as an entity and organization," said Donna Makkhavane with the City of Amarillo.

The city will pay Randall County close to $55 a day for each inmate.
