CANYON, TEXAS -- The8th Annual Food Bowl put together by Kids Inc. and Blue Cross Blue Shield was on Saturday. 6th grade tackle football teams from around the Panhandle gathered at Kimbrough Stadium, to play their hearts out and help a great cause. 19 teams of 6th graders battled it out on Kimbrough Stadium's turf. And for many of them, it's their first and last time to feel the excitement of playing in a big stadium.
"I think it's a great opportunity for them to get to play in a stadium that has 20,000 seats, you know realistically, most of them won't ever get a chance to do that, it's a great opportunity for them to experience it, play down on the turf in a big city," said Jim Lackey, President and CEO of Kids Inc.
"I am really excited. i can't wait to play on the turf, it's the first time ive ever played on Kimbroughs field," said Seth Hughes, 6th Grader at Canyon Intermediate.
Each player, coach, parent, and spectators were asked to bring a can of food or a dollar that will go to the High Plains Food Bank.
"8 years ago we thought why not something for High Plains Food Bank? They were at a need at a critically point at that time and so it's been something we've done, I think they appreciate it, it's a great time right before Thanksgiving for them to beef up their stock," said Lackey.
"This is our 9th game, its kind of our BCS Bowl Championship, if you will and the boys are really excited to play out here and this is their last year before they go onto junior high and their last year of Kids Inc," said De Jon Douglass, Head Coach of Canyon Intermediate.
Right now, we don't know how much food or money was raised from the event. But we'll keep you posted. Meantime, if you would like to donate to the High Plains Food Bank click on the links provided.
