AMARILLO, TEXAS -- School uniforms for public schools in the Amarillo Independent School District was once again a topic for discussion in a meeting Monday night. The board of trustees invited parents to join in on the discussion, and offer their opinions on the matter.
Glenwood Elementary principal Brandy Self addressed those gathered, and showed parents what the standardized dress code that the kids in her school are wearing.
Parents then broke up into groups to discuss the issue of whether they liked the idea of a dress code like that.
Parent Kevin Fugit can see both sides of the arguments.
"Some parents were saying that they think students should be able to make their own choices, I can agree with that. But I can also feel that standardized dress, standardized dressing can help them make better decisions further on in life also."
Parents on ProNews 7's Facebook page sounded off on the idea of uniforms, parent Kim Farmer Flores wrote, "I don't have a uniform at work. I am a working professional, and I dress for my job. I hope my child grows up and isn't stuck wearing a 'uniform' in his future."
Another parent Melissa Harrold Ornelas wrote, "My son goes to Glenwood Elem. and they wear uniforms, and the school is so stuctured that it seems like a private school! My son LOVES it there!! I have 6th and 8th graders at Bowie Middle School, and all the kids care about is image! I say... it is time to bring in uniforms for all grade K-12!!!"
No final decisions were made in Monday's meeting. But parents realized that in the end, it all comes down to each individual school deciding whether its parents want their kids clothes picked out for them.
