AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Area schools are celebrating Veterans Day all week and taking a closer look at its special meaning. At Austin Middle School students were treated to an assembly filled with veterans who work at the school and family members of some of the students. A special presentation was given of each military branch's flag, while the school's orchestra played. Veterans say it's important our youth understand the importance of the day.
"These children that go to school today are kind of out of the loop it seems, but in the last few years, they have to be reminded that we are a nation at war and that we still have troops out in the field fighting for our liberties," said Dan Johnson, Veteran & with America Supports You Texas.
"A lot of these fellows gave it all for our country and these boys and girls today need to be reminded what the cost of freedom really is, some of them didn't come home," said Johnson.
Students say they have a new found appreciation for our veterans.
"We're appreciating them and what they do. They do a lot for us and we all should appreciate it," said Claire Whitehead, 8th grader at Austin Middle School.
