AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Many of you are going to be hitting the roads or airport to travel to relatives or friends for Thanksgiving. But before you do, we want to save you from added travel stress. It's no secret the holidays mean busier roads and congested airports. So, Pronews 7 talked with the Department of Public Safety and airport officials for tips on how you can make it to your destination safely and stress free. And whether it's by vehicle or airplane, there is a common theme. Plan ahead. At airports, a big topic has been the new full body scanners and what some are calling aggressive pat-downs. At least for now, that's not something travelers will have to worry about at Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport. But there is something airport officials say passengers can do to avoid security hang-ups.
"What would help is if they have items that are questionable they can place them in their checked bags and not through their carry on ," said Steven Picou, Deputy Director of Aviation at Airport.
Passengers can also check on their flight's status ahead of time.
"The airport recommends that passengers contact the airlines prior to travel this way, it gives passengers the opportunity to see what time they need to arrive or how far in advance they need to arrive before their flight," adds Picou.
If you're traveling by road, the Department of Public Safety says buckle up, don't drink and drive, plan ahead, and follow speed limits.
"If you're going to be traveling know that they are going to be a lot of troopers out of course other law enforcement agencies as well across texas and across the united states are going to out trying to maintain the safety on our roadways by increased enforcement," said Trooper Gabriel Medrano, DPS Spokesman.
