Large fire prompts evacuations near Hereford

Pronews 7 has learned firefighters surrounded the fire just before dusk to get it under contol. Officials say a lot of smoke and visible flames came from debris from a junk yard burning in the grass.

Initially, the fire prompted many evacutions south of Highway 385.

Acreage estimates are not yet available.

 Update 8:00p
Pronews 7 has confirmed the fire is now under control.

A large grassfire is in progress south of Hereford near Hamby's and the Country Club, the Deaf Smith County Sheriff's Office tells Pronews 7. Residents along the area and south of Highway 365 are being asked to vacuate.

Storm Search 7 Meteorologist Shelly Sites says winds in the Hereford area are generally out of the West and are very strong. She says winds should begin to subside around sunset.
