PORTALES, N.M. -- Eastern New Mexico University has set a record enrollment with an almost 10 percent increase compared to last year.

According to ENMU, the fall 2011 enrollment is at 5,574 students. That's a 9.7 percent increase compares to last year's record year of 5,080 students.

As for the number of student credit hours, that increased by six percent.

4,406 students attend undergraduate school while 1,168 are graduate students.

The University has 689 first-time freshman, up 12 percent from last year.

"We're very happy with enrollment, in terms of numbers and quality," said Steven Gamble, ENMU president. "We're especially happy that the average ACT scores of our new freshmen is 20.2, which exceeds the state average of 19.8."

Gamble says the increase in enrollment is thanks to several factors including the ecomony and a solid reputation for academics at an affordable cost.

"I believe that word has gotten out that Eastern is a great choice for those who are serious about achieving academic and social success. Eastern is committed to providing our students the opportunity to excel in both because we know that they complement each other in enabling students to enjoy a successful career and personal life."
